The Purpose:   To encourage young adults in exploring ideas and stories of faith and religion so that:   our beliefs become our own, we grow up in our relationship with Jesus Christ, and we recognize our role to play in God's great story. The Business:   Provide a class in which it is safe to:   discover the Biblical foundation for our beliefs, share our personal relationship with Jesus Christ, ask tough questions, express differing opinions, relate to stories of faith in our culture, encourage one another, help others learn unique perspectives on God's great story, and learn to serve God's purpose in our generation. The Values:   Love and authenticity in believing, behaving, and belonging. 1.   Our presupposition and belief is that God loves us unconditionally.   All we believe should deepen our realization of this fact.   All our actions should demonstrate the transforming power of this fact in our love for God and others. 2.   We believe God's truth is most clearly and concisely revealed in the Bible; therefore, the scripture only principle (Sola Scriptura) will be the standard by which we measure all beliefs. 3.   Because God's truth is so great that it spills over into every area of life, other secondary sources will be referenced from EGW to contemporary literature and movies. 4.   This class is an open forum where EVERY question is allowed and discussion of differing beliefs and perspectives is encouraged, desired, and expected. 5.   As we grow in our understanding of God through studying the Bible and other spiritual disciplines each of us will form our own set of beliefs. 6.   Our denomination has a stated set of beliefs called the 27 fundamental beliefs. Our intent is to first prayerfully study the Bible from a historical perspective; second utilize this understanding to discover biblical principles on which to base our beliefs and actions; and third, explore first of all if and then how our denomination's stated beliefs find support in the Bible and enhance our understanding of God's unconditional love. 7.   We believe that Christianity is always intensely practical and that our beliefs should lead to a saving relationship with Jesus Christ, Who then works a radical life-long change within us, preparing us for service in a particular area.   As we are growing in our beliefs and understanding we must also grow in love and action; therefore, in addition to the class study time, we will plan times for socializing, community worship, prayer, and practical outreach. |
